Before him, the first spot was occupied by Lakshmi Mittal or sometimes it was occupied by Azim Premji. Also as of December 2012, his net worth is $22.3 Billion according to Forbes Magazine.

At a time when India hardy knew about refining of crude oil, he assisted his father in what led to the creation of first oil refinery in India. When it comes to academics, he holds an engineering degree from a prestigious institute in Mumbai. He is a Chemical Engineer from Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai. This richest man of India dropped-out of Stanford University while pursuing MBA. He did so to help his father in creation of Polyester Filament Yarn manufacturing plant.
Birth and Early Life
This richest person was born on 19th April 1957 in the city of Aden in present-day Yemen. He was born to Dhirubhai Ambani and Kokilaben Ambani. His father worked in Aden at the time of his birth. His family is from state of Gujarat in India. After his birth, his father left Aden in the year 1958 and returned to India with Rupees 15,000 ($300 approx).
Dhirubhai Ambani started a textile company in 1966 and named his brand ‘Vimal’. This brand even continues to sell even today. Dhiru Bhai is a well-know ‘rags to riches’ man in India and even today is a source of inspiration for millions of Indians.
At the age of one, Mukesh had been in India and grew up in the city of Bombay (present-day Mumbai).
Education in India
He did his schooling from Hill Grange High School which is located near Peddar Road in Mumbai. His school was famous for alumni like Rajesh Khanna, Anil Ambani, Himesh Reshamiya and others. Mukesh Ambani went on to join IIT Bombay for a short period of time. After his Inter-Science results were out, he left IIT to join University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT) in Mumbai. He did his engineering from UDTC.
After completing bachelors in chemical engineering, Mukesh Ambani, wealthiest man in India, went to Stanford University to pursue Masters in Business Administration (MBA). In the year 1981, Mukesh Ambani, richest man in India, was back in India from Stanford University leaving his studies mid-way. He joined Polyester Plant and was placed under his boss named Rasikbhai Meswani. Putting him under Rasikbhai was the decision of his father.
After working at Reliance Textile Industries, he soon learnt many new things which were to help in near future. Along with his brother, led by Dhirubhai Ambani, they propelled Reliance from a textile company to a diversified industry. And to reflect this in their name, it ‘Reliance textile Industries’ was changed to ‘Reliance Industries’.
Relaince lost one of their top leaders who was Rasikbhai. After this, Mukesh Ambani began to sense greater responsibilities. Under his leadership, his company led a backward integration from textile to petroleum refining industry and later on to drilling oil and gas in India.
He married Nita Ambani and together they have three children. Their names are Akash, Anant and Isha Ambani. He is brother of another Indian billionaire and one of the richest man in India named Anil Ambani. he split with his brother years after his father death. Various business of Reliance was divided between the two brothers.
Since 2007, he has been the richest man in India. He lives with his family in house named Antilla which is the most expensive in the world. Its market value stands at more than $1 Billion.
